Soka Gakkai: Issue A Statement Urging Japan To Join Nuclear Ban Treaty

We Urge the Soka Gakkai to Officially Issue a Statement in the Seikyo Newspaper Calling on Japan to Participate in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Petition Letter

Mr. Minoru Harada

President of Soka Gakkai

On July 7 , 2017, the United Nations adopted the "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons" thanks to the efforts of International Campaign for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN.) ICAN is known for their humanitarian work on bringing the stories of A-bomb survivors to a world stage. In honor of its achievement, ICAN was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December of the same year.

However, Japan, only country to have experienced two atomic bombs, has not joined the treaty, and takes the opposite position.

The abolition of nuclear weapons is the last will of second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda. On September 8, 1957, he made his historic declaration calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. This declaration is regarded as the starting point for global peace activities of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI.)

SGI President Daisaku Ikeda has been urging Japanese Government to participate in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in his numerous speeches and peace proposals.

Although the SGI has been collaborating with ICAN, no formal statement from the Soka Gakkai to call on Japan to participate in the treaty has been released yet. Furthermore, the Soka Gakkai continues their support for the majority party(LDP)/Komeito Party who oppose the treaty. Now is the time to take action to achieve the last will of President Toda and work in accordance with the teachings of President Ikeda's philosophy of peace.

The Soka Gakkai should stand beside the A-bomb survivors and open the way for the abolition of nuclear weapons by issuing a formal statement in the Seikyo Newspaper that the Japanese Government should participate in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

With Best Regards,

A Soka Gakkai Member,

Calling for Participation in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
